Urban Nature: New Brighton Park, Vancouver Canada
Mid-January 2014
It has been three years since I visited family in Vancouver, British Columbia. I was born and raised here; I love this place, so no culture shock.
Of course, I was one of the few who was surprised to see Vancouver on the list of *most beautiful city in the world* or *best place in the world*. I think it's all hype. Yes, Vancouver, where I grew up, definitely. East of Vancouver, Skid Row, Train Station, Industrial Harbor... means the south coast of Burrard Inlet. But wait... come in. This is a fjord in the middle of the city, and yes, there is nature here.
So, I am sharing photos from my first evening mini-walk in New Brighton Park from my sister's house. Ambitious efforts are being made to restore flow through it. It was a great day, the sun came out and it was incredibly hot (8 C). In a short period of 30 minutes, I saw 15 species of birds.
Some notes about birds.
In a European context, it's amazing how many birds there are. More than 150 pelagic cormorants, hundreds of crows and northwestern gulls on the second bridge across the channel, Ka Gusi and a large number of terns and stilt. Enter the water. A pair of bald eagles flew past him. But the most beautiful bird for Europeans today is the American robin. ... a tropical thrush in the North Pacific. I also loved watching sparrows sing (little sparrows that Europeans find funny!!). Of course, many foreign sparrows, H. sparrows; I was surprised to see Eurasian collared pigeons. (Just arrived, not here 3 years ago...).
Glad to be back in the port industry in this city.
