Tropical' crab Percnon gibbesi at HCMR Attika Greece

Well, summer is over, but this place looks like a tropical paradise to me: our high school playground.

October 16, 2014 HCMR Anavyssos Attica

We went out at night for a quick snorkel in the rocky Aegean bay in our backyard. This place is 50 meters away from my work office in HCMR, so I can soak in the comfortable fall sea while others can smoke or pour water in the dining room. There is no one outside. A great way to wake up after a lot of office work…

This summer I saw a jumping crab Percnon gibbesi (Grapsidae) and wanted to photograph it. They are awesome super skinny crabs that are very big and fast. They look very tropical to me. And they are strangers: they were first recorded in Greece in 2004, and today they are established in many regions of the Aegean and the south-central Ionian Sea. It is one of the fastest growing invasive species (the first record in the Mediterranean Sea dates back to 1999). Their homeland is the temperate and tropical Atlantic and the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. The appetite for these fascinating creatures is already high on many coasts in southern Greece. Today I easily counted about 15 crabs on 100 meters of rocky beach. Distance Both small and large. These are vegetarians that harvest algae using ultra-fast mechanical action. I also found a couple of native crabs. Fascinating ecology of the Mediterranean invasion!

Close-up of Percnon gibbesi .
It quickly feeds on algae between stones.
Head down, fast and light as a cockroach!
Exotic, elegant, extravagant and extravagant colors.
An autochthonous crab of the genus Pachygrapsus . Am I in competition?
