Sperchios River Riparian Habitats: Winter survey

At the beginning of February in the Spercius valley (Iti mountain marking the landscape). Without real application I fear most of the forest will disappear.

Sperkyus river in winter

The Sperkyus Valley is located 200 km north of Athens. The river Spercius crosses the valley for about 80 kilometers. There are many branches, today most of them are drained by snow melt and rain water. The river Sperchios comes from the ancient Greek verb "spercho" meaning "to run". It is a sudden flood that forces a lot of sediment into the sea. Coastal areas fascinate me. The river is very wide along the main stem and has many interesting catchment areas. Here I offer some quick images from a two-day winter shoot.

The study site is located in Hani Banitsu Volle Winterstroom (Capsiotic Stream at an altitude of 450 m).

Study site on Hani Banitsu in full winter flow. Notice the Greek fir on the edge of the very narrow pool.
Hani Banitsu Study Area: Landscape - oak forests dominate the sub-valleys of these main waterways.
Hani Banetsu study area: Platanus Orientalis eastern levels. sacred trees

In more than 60 branches of Sperchios: it is near the town of Platystomo (Torrente Ficinas).
The eastern planet near Baliuri town - here the forest is about 280 meters on the left and this is the middle of the river.

Full stream near Rhodonia. One of the largest Platanos forests in the valley. There is also a lot of Alnus glutinosa here.

The old branch enters the delta (over the highway bridge) upstream from the LK plant.
The fields of the delta are flooded (the city of Lamia in the background).

White poplar (Populus alba ) down from the ELK plant. We heard the Syrian woodcutter here.

Water after flooding in the basement of the LK factory. It smells like factory sewage.
