Reference conditions of the river: Sperchios Study
February 2015
One of the most important aspects of our study of rivers is the historical aspect.
Here I found a map of the Sparchios valley in Friedrich Stellin 's "Greek Thessaly" (1924). I know nothing about Friedrich Stalin (1874-1936), but I appreciate his input (also thanks to: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_valley_of_spercheios.jpg). Many interesting hydromorphological aspects are clear and quantifiable on this map (watershed length, meander shape, delta tributaries, delta ephemeral reservoirs, delta shoreline shape, major tributaries, etc.). The main channel has changed, the mouth of this old river is very close to Thermopylae (today it is another "old channel" and the new dam is a completely different situation).
Below is an engraving from 1877 (from d elcampe.net ) showing the "Gulf of Thermopylae" with the large deltaic marshes of Sparchios (not present today!!!). This is an important image for plant ecologists, as extensive submerged reed thickets are clearly visible (reed swamp thickets are treeless and areas of open water are visible).
