Published: A rare fish, the Oman Blenny, discovered in Kuwait
Athens, December 20, 2014
On a diving trip to Kuwait* in June 2014, Aris Vidalis and I took some pictures of a strange fish swimming upside down in a dark cave on the side of a reef at a depth of 30 meters.
The photographs were later identified as Oman blenny, a small yellow fish known to be endemic to Oman and rarely mentioned in tropical fish literature. Endemic instruments are found only in Oman!!! The type locality where this little fish was first described (in 1985) is 1500 km from Kuwait in the Indian Ocean! So we decided to publish it. Although we did not catch this fish and it was unique, we carefully identified it with the help of our good colleague, Dr. Ronald Fricke, an expert in tropical fish.
The entry has just been published in the prestigious journal CBM ( Cahiers de Biologie Marine ), published by the Station Biologique de Roscoff and with an impact factor of around 0.62 (in 2013). I would like to thank the editors for placing the findings on the front page of the journal (above) and hope that this will contribute to further research on cryptobenthic reef fish stocks in Kuwait (and the Persian Gulf).
Since the article was uploaded to the Research Gate account just two days ago, it has already been downloaded more than 35 times, and I received an interesting response from Dr. Uwe Sejonz of the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt:
"Gill and Zajontz reported [the Omani dog] in 2011 (p. 11) while it was still in Socotra (visual observation), so it is certainly not endemic to Oman and we can now assume a fairly wide Arabian area. perhaps the entire Red Sea region except.
So, basically, this means that the fish is more widespread and not at all endemic to Oman (and probably didn't enter the Persian Gulf as some sort of freshwater invader - read our article for more on this). So far, few fish are seen in Oman or Yemen. So look for this fish in the Persian/Arabian Gulf and Western Indian Ocean to determine its distribution.
