Phaliriko Delta Athens: Summer rain on naturalists meeting

28 May 2015 - Phaleron Bay, Athens

During the first week of May, the plains of Attica are painted yellow, yellow in the warm rays of the sun. And sometimes we have storms. We had one today.

We organized to meet and discuss our views on the proposal to create a Natural Park in the Faliriko Delta on the banks of the Ilissos River on the coast of Athens.

The beauty and biodiversity of this "open plot" ecosystem is what I love so much. This year we have a nesting sweater with a little bow. By this time the late spring migration was over, but a variety of birds were here to greet us: Barn Swallows, House Martens, Olive Warblers, Cisticola, Sardine Warblers, Black Terns, Yellow-legged Gulls.

In particular, much-needed flood control infrastructure is associated with the creation of wetlands here, so the area has great potential for restoration. The site is now almost a swampy area.
Pools are made after rain. These pools mimic an old pond environment. Native tamarisks form lush meadows. One of our partners has already prepared a large list of plants for the site. A few rare plant species and one or two rares. About 20 species of butterflies were counted, as well as many other unexpected animals, including the tiger snake, the Balkan green lizard. The marine life here is unique: a semi-natural urban delta system, almost estuarine (but with minimal currents). In spring and early summer, eutrophic turtles spend weeks here and are easy to spot. In this sense, as such, the site is of great importance as a saturated marine, wetland and coastal ecosystem... in the Greek capital and port.

But like many free environments, this area is often threatened by unrealistic development proposals... so we're working against it.

Here are my photos from today's meet right after the rain.
