Nature Park Proposal: Phaliriko Delta - gathering of naturalists
|Moxato coast in Faliriko delta. 160 bird species have been recorded...it's a hotspot for urban biodiversity.|
On May 8, 2015 Faliriko delta in Falero Bay, Athens.
After creating a Facebook group, discussing the situation with many leading environmentalists, the launch of our campaign almost stopped. We have to go to a strategic stage. Good thing the momentum has been pretty good so far. Fortunately, there is real interest from many great conservationists who are aware of the biodiversity and restoration potential.
Now specifically, what do we imagine, the desired state in the future. The vision of the natural park; actually partial restoration of wetlands. We don't want a "hybrid park" (ie a typical large coastal park with a little nature). We don't need a typical city park or waterfront development.
The most important aspect of this area is the Moscato coast. This "swamp and dam" area is located between the Kifissos and Ilissos rivers. Now it belongs to PUBLIC PROPERTIES Co. (PPCo SA), whose mission is the development and management of the public private domain. The company is fully owned by the Greek state and controlled by the Ministry of Finance. Would they like to visit a nature park?
The surrounding municipalities, Kalithea and Mochato, also have the right to vote. Would they like a nature park?
Another promising project due for completion by 2016 is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Culture Center (SNFCC), which is being built on the road behind the former Olympic venues. Would these good neighbors want a nature park?
As conservationists, we have no doubt that this first-class coastal development must be designed to give something back to the landscape, the historic significance of the Athens coastline, nature and culture.

|Sunset in Faleron Bay. We also spotted a Loggerhead Sea Turtle today... This sheltered inland lagoon is rich and productive as it has two estuaries. Part of the main reason for the biodiversity value of the Faliriko Delta.|
