National Park Hoge Kempen, Belgium
19-23 September 2016, Belgium
At the Ecosystem Services Conference in Antwerp, we had a great trip to a unique protected area. Under the guidance of Johan van den Bosch , the park's project manager, we learned a lot about the new protected area, its history and challenges.
I have shared some photos here.
The Hoge Kempen National Park is a unique natural area with over 5,700 hectares of forests and land protected and managed by the Flemish State Agency for Nature and Forestry. This is a "natural success": the old mining land has been turned into a conservation area, the largest in the country. Huge heaps of coal slag have turned into beautiful grass-covered hills, teeming with wild flowers and butterflies. On March 23, 2006, the national park was officially opened. Meanwhile, 6 gates have been created as starting points for trips to this charming region. Non-profit organizations and governments are working together to develop sustainable nature tourism in and around these natural areas. The balance between nature, people and tourism should contribute to the conservation, restoration and revival of biodiversity. What we saw was a re-wild in the making - it looked great!
