Memoir: Red-breasted Goose Phaleron Bay 1985
Flashbacks: Valeron Delta, Athens, Attica.
It was 19:10 on February 15, 1985. I went out to the mouth of the Ilissos River in Athens Kallithea to watch the birds. I saw a little goose on the beach - a red-breasted rarity! Then a large flock of white-headed geese flew overhead. I've been bird watching for fifteen years and these have been very beautiful birds to me - and to southern Greece, not to mention Athena! Anyway, he ran home and got a camera - he took 11 pictures of the goose. I don't have the best pictures anymore, but I'm posting four pictures from that time today. Yellow-legged gulls chased the goose at 9:25 AM. I cherish the memories that took me back to those days three decades ago.
The presence of such a rare bird enhanced the importance of this area as a potential protected area - then we started a campaign to protect Valero (then we called it Delta Elisos). Many ornithologists consider this area to be their favorite habitat and have made some really interesting discoveries. The announcement of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in September 1997 destroyed the dream of a natural park. Unfortunately, no one has heard of the idea of a natural park - it's a good idea and fit for the post-Olympic era. The concept can be useful.
