We had another great educational and electrofishing trip to Karpenisi, Euritania; Visiting the same place, we fished in 2012 on March 9 and 10 in search of trout.

Karpenisi is a mountain town about 300 km north of Athens at an altitude of 960 meters. It is completely surrounded by the Rumeli Mountains, the southernmost slope of the Pindu Mountains (an extension of the Dinaric Alps). Rivers and streams flow to the west, part of the great Achelous basin, and there is much, much water; and dense forests everywhere.

Here the local environmental education center invited a large group of school teachers with about 70 participants (!!) to an educational networking workshop entitled "Animals at Risk". I have focused on fish, but many notable celebrities from other fields include Kostas Papakonstantinou (section), Charitakis Papaioannou (horn), Vasiliki Kati (wildlife, birds), Christos Thomaidis (quail) and environmental education expert Manolis Kopanakis and Stelios Silyounis. . We also had spouses and children with us, so the group was really big.

The weather was terrible. Rain, rain, cold rain. But we all learned a lot from the experience.

I was looking for head fin patterns. The local trout is one of a number of banned species now called Western Balkan trout or Salmo Fariodes . We found some in the spring influx we visited in March 2012, but this time only yearlings were found. Surprisingly they were 10 to 12 cm and did not look like big fish. We worked hard.

Below are some random photos taken mostly by my husband Vasiliki Vlamy.
