Here, near the confluence of the Ardas River with the Evros, is the largest remaining alluvial forest in the river valley. |
Publication: Contributions to the Euro-Meric Greenbelt
One of the most exciting and frustrating places to study is the river frontier in an area of intense political conflict. My colleagues and I worked on the Evros River (Merich in Turkish, Marisa in Bulgarian). The bed of this great river forms an uncertain border between Greece and Turkey.
We assessed catchment status by calculating the stable river islands in these major rivers. In fact, there are 219 islands in the 218 km long river, 145 of which are over 1000 m2 in size. Of these, we analyze their condition by assessing the amount of forest above them: a simple and reliable measure of ecological integrity. We have mapped the 12 biggest forest fires in Turkey and along the Greek coast.
This type of work is very simple and effective and gives us a good overview of the green belt protection of large transboundary rivers. We hope that such activities will contribute to conservation, especially as the river faces high risk of flooding and water management problems.
