Butcher's shop in Samothraki - big fish trophy photos
Samothrace, winter 2013
Have you noticed that many fishmongers display "old photos" of prized trophies? It can be a constructive idea to try to collect such photos: of course, most of them are terrible or on the verge of disgust. They show the most prized sea creatures dead and washed ashore. However, this is proof that the megafauna of the seas somehow survives. And although they are not large individuals for the species in question, they seem to have survived the carnage. Let's remember that the living creatures in the sea need our help.
These are photos I took in one of the fish shops in the port of Samothrace. Most of the photos are not that old. They feature specimens of blue sharks, bluefin tuna, bull sharks and thresher sharks caught in Samothrace.
I guess the Shakespeare part, what I remember from school, rings true here….Oh, forgive me, bloody earth.
How good and kind I am to these butchers!
You are noble ruins
who once lived in the flow of time.
Woe to this hand that sheds precious blood!Antonio Julius Caesar; Shakespeare, Act 3, Scene 1.
