World Fish Migration Day: Public Event on the Rafina River in Rafina, Attica, Greece
April 21, Saturday, I and a few friends will officially take part in the World Fish Migration Day !
A few years ago, we also organized a successful event on the WFMD network (see ) and it was a success.
In fact, this year I'm doing it regardless of my work at HCMR, because today coincides with the big bird race in Greece*, a tradition that has been held in Athens since the early 2000s. , I wish I could follow both shows... (So both will be more like side projects... sorry...).
My team of ornithologists (yes...) and my colleagues from the institute will hold a two-hour public event in the Rafinabah Estuary and we will take fish samples; we will display our live catch in a small aquarium (...after that we will continue with the bird race which ends at 19:00 in Tricis park, see asterisk "*" below at the end of this article).
The Rafina River is an important unobstructed waterway for some migratory fish, especially the European eel. It is also an important opportunity for the restoration of nature "near the city", which needs urgent care (...and is under threat). We invite the public to come to Rafina and see what we do when we study fish scientifically and talk about eels, mullets and other interesting migratory fish.
We are trying:
- Carrying out scientific sampling with the help of electric catchers and backpack anglers.
- Display live fish in the "wild aquarium" set up on site.
- The fish are photographed in the aquarium and then released alive into the river.
- Everyone will be notified and will be able to take a photo
- No fish were harmed - we do not recommend keeping wild fish in captivity.
Electric fishing is a great way to catch fish without harming them. An electric fishing generator shocks the fish for a short time, which can then be netted, measured and released alive into the river. Live fish can also be placed in an open aquarium for short-term photography. If a field aquarium is created to depict a natural landscape, it can be called a "wild aquarium" - and this is a kind of art.
This type of public awareness is very easy to demonstrate if you have a basic knowledge of ichthyology and an official license to catch and handle native fish for research purposes.

Rafina is a port city just 25 km east of Athens. For more information about the Rafina River and campaigns to protect it visit: http://zogaris.blogspot.gr/2015/03/campaign-rafina-river-re-visited.html
|This is the Rafina River at its mouth near Karamanlis Park. We met on the path next to Evvoikou Street, which led to Karamanlis Park. This is the part of the river we want to try. The urban and suburban Rafina River is the site of controversial river management projects (water meters, etc.). |Setting up a simple electric fishing "wild aquarium" is an easy way to show people how to fish and take great photos. In this case, we conducted an expedition as part of the KLBP project and did not pay much attention to preparation.|
All ichthyologists should photograph more fish. You really do your best here.
Children love the wild aquarium. This is our first World Fish Migration Day celebration in Vravron in 2014. See: http://zogaris.blogspot.gr/2014/05/world-fish-migration-day-vravrona.html .
The European eel is a globally endangered fish listed by the IUCN as a critically important fish that we will attempt to capture and study during our work in Rafina. We also need to catch mullet species. Everything for display in captivity in a "wild aquarium" created in a short time. This eel is also from our first World Migration Day celebration in Vravron in 2014. See: http://zogaris.blogspot.gr/2014/05/world-fish-migration-day-vravrona.html
