5th summer school in Samothrace
Water and Social Ecology: Theory and Practice

When: June 3-12, 2018
Where: the island of Samothrace, Aegean Sea, Greece .


This course is primarily intended for students with some postgraduate research experience ( Master's level or transfer to postgraduate). from both natural and social sciences. Students should demonstrate their interest in the issues of sustainable development and environmental development. Qualified candidates will be selected to assist in our research and long-term island conservation efforts. It will be a ten-day educational extravaganza in Samothrace!

Historical context

Most of Samothrace, including most of the surrounding sea, is a Natura 2000 protected area. There are many important conservation issues here (eg search this blog for "samtrucki"). On Samothrace, researchers from the Vienna Institute of Social Ecology of the University of Alpenadria ( www.aau.at/socec ) have been studying social exchange on the island since 2007, and some professors visited the island many years ago. These scientists have established an important network of contacts with many Greek scientists and interested locals in order to help preserve Samothraki, including Biosphere Reserve status for the entire island (see http://sustainable-samothraki.net/ ). In addition, the island is a Long-Term Research Area (LTER), originally established by researchers from the Hellenic Center for Marine Research - HCMR ( www.imbriw.hcmr.gr ), a government organization for water and marine resources research. The Samothraki Nature Observatory (SNO) is a special research project created in cooperation between HCMR and the Municipality of Samothraki for the study, promotion, management and protection of natural heritage ( http://samothraki-observatory.hcmr.gr/ ). Our HCMR team is fascinated by the island – a laboratory for conservation research and education.

This is the fifth year since Summers University was founded. This is clearly a losing business. This is an exemplary type of "gift" from a global group of open research leaders in research and education. Researchers collaborate, donate their time and effort, and students participate in a real educational and environmental project that really helps the island.

Summer University 2018

Students use their academic training and fieldwork to support long-term conservation and research on the island. The work here will be an interdisciplinary research process.

In most cases, students are divided into small groups and conduct socio-economic and environmental research through fieldwork and research using a variety of social and natural science methods. Each technique is demonstrated in practice by experienced instructors who take small groups of students through the field. You will be supported by expatriate teachers, including experienced teachers and tutors. Usually the number of teachers and specialists participating and gathering in the group is more than 15 people. Local residents will also meet and help solve the problem under investigation. A special experience studying abroad.

Each participating student will focus on one of the following research areas (and will be open to 1-2 others).

(1) Landscape assessment in island protected areas . This module: a) applies landscape assessment using field surveys and questionnaires and b) assesses landscape integrity, particularly for proposed wind farms in protected areas (Samothraki Sites Nature 2000). Methods include structural analysis of cultural landscape characteristics and cultural ecosystem services.

(2) Coastal morphology and human activities in accordance with the principles of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). Coastal morphodynamics is studied from a holistic perspective, including the terrestrial zone and the underwater zone. Field observations and on- site measurements are performed, as well as data analysis. In addition, the module mainly tries to integrate anthropogenic activities and the coastal environment using the principles of adaptation.

(3) Hydrometeorological research and monitoring infrastructure for proper water management. The aim of the module is to provide methods of hydrometeorological research using models that can provide useful information on the installation of automatic monitoring stations and optimization of water resources management plans. Meteorological and hydrological instruments will be demonstrated and installed at the case study site, and the role of atmospheric effects and topography on the water and energy cycle in the environment will be discussed. Attempts are being made to optimize existing or future water resource management plans taking into account social, economic and climate change factors.

(4) Sustainable reproduction. Cattle breeding in Samothrace reached unprecedented levels in the 1990s, leading to extensive grazing and soil erosion. Even today, cattle numbers exceed sustainable levels and prevent the recovery of local ecosystems. In this module, we will speak to local smallholder farmers to learn more about their day-to-day realities, opportunities and obstacles to more sustainable farming practices. With the help of our local partners, we will conduct interviews with farmers to collect socio-economic and qualitative data that will inform further research.

(5) Energy exchange. How much power does Samothrace need and where is it to be found? In this module, we present existing statistics and the results of previous studies. The students' task will be to synthesize these data into meaningful data and to fill in estimates of missing parameters (eg opal fuel, etc.) by interviewing local experts and possibly a few sample households.

Tuition : The fee of 350 euros includes participation in theoretical and practical classes, teaching in the field, accommodation in campsites, local transport, half board (breakfast and lunch), standard dinner and a day trip.

Student credit : participants who successfully complete the summer school will receive a certificate of participation that will give them 6 ECTS.

Location : Located in the Municipal Camp, a unique 20,000m2 site where native eastern lowland trees stretch right down to the sea. Come with your tent!

The island is not only rich in running water, but also has the most important natural wetlands of the North Aegean Islands.
Mountains: A large part of Samothrace is a large rocky mountain. It's simple and clear, sometimes one oak unites it all.
