Pylos in winter

Greek Pylos
January 2020

Voidokilia Bay in Yalova Bay, in the Natura 2000 region, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. And the coastal walks over the limestone cliffs are perhaps one of the most captivating nature walks in the country. The flip side is the climate here, warm in winter...meaning a good 17C during our visit in mid-January. And one of us even swam in the sea.

This is a place where a lot of new tourism developments take place on the coast; Construction has just started, you can feel it. However, many are still so beautiful. Emerging Mediterranean communities require close monitoring and conservation support.

Well... Hello and Happy New Year everyone!!! - Our first business trip of the year... to the beautiful city of Pylos. We wish all our friends to keep traveling, loving nature and loving life in 2020.

Impressive old Navarino Castle on a limestone hill, first built by the Franks in the 13th century. More hills and cliffs on Sphacteria Island, Navarino Bay.

Enter Voidocilia Bay. Limestone has sharp teeth.

Part of the Gialova Bay, a famous wetland. Rich in bird life, we easily found 25 species in less than an hour.
over the Gulf of Gialova; Beautiful long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus) surrounded by crows and seagulls (comprising of two photos).

Known as Sandy Pylos since pre-classical times. The sand dunes here are impressive.

This is Costa Navarino , a large hotel complex developed by the Ecosystem Observatory's long-term local partner, the Navarino Ecological Observatory ( ). It is not easy to balance natural development and tourism. They seem to be trying to fit everything here.
Two experienced travelers walking on the beach in winter. Voidocilia alone. Don't come here in summer.

The water is very clear, like jelly.

LTER Teamwork at the NEO Facility.

This is part of a long-term ecosystem study (LTR) in Gialova Bay, Greece. Thanks to the local partner Navarino Ecological Observatory (NEO) for hosting and leading the meeting ( ).
